Abstract
This tutorial targets users and practitioners of semantic technologies. The tutorial will provide guidance for the development of ontology-based applications with respect to the complete ontology lifecycle. We illustrate fundamental principles and best practices in ontology design, mapping, evolution and reasoning in practical examples. We demonstrate ontology engineering and development activities using the NeOn Toolkit, a state-of-the-art ontology design environment including support for engineering ontologies and semantic applications. The tutorial also includes a survey on the methodology required to manage complex ontology networks across their entire lifecycle, and illustrates the use of the overall NeOn Toolkit infrastructure and methods to build semantic applications from real-world domains like the Pharmaceutical sector. Finally, the NeOn vision on the semantic tool landscape is completed with an overview on related technologies and utilities.
