Ontologies for the Real-World

Thomas Hoppe, Ontonym (DE)

Abstract

Semantic Web Technology gains momentum for real-world applications, but for most applications useful ontologies do not yet exist. For supporting search processes these ontologies have to take the perspective of the user into account. The main information source about the user is his query, a circumscription of the concept she is interested in.

As current search technology shows, just searching for the query terms does not suffice. For delivering better search results semantically equivalent and similar terms need to be considered too. We argue that in order to build helpful search functions, the background knowledge represented for semantic search should represent what the average user considers to be equivalent or similar.
